Great post about what can happen if you don't keep on top of things Nick. People might not like paying their accountant, but they pay for themselves over the course of the year

Good article Nick. I think the saying is If you think its expensive paying a professional, wait until you get the bill for a amateur.

I wish I had thought of QR codes before I had my last batch of business cards printed! Thanks for the link to the generation site - that was very useful. I think a QR code on my next set of business cards directing people to my blog is the way to go!

Hi Jim - yes you are right, £150 is for the year. I did allude to that in the final paragraph, but didn't mention that it was for the year.

Your client does right to treat his staff, it's an excellent way of showing your appreciation for the effort they put in.

Is it not the case that this £150 is to cover the whole year too. I have a client who is doing well and likes to have staff nights out every quarter to keep morale up. As I recall the £150 would include all of these too.

Doesn't leave much for Santa !!

Hi Anthony,

When the returns are filed and no further tax is due, the penalties should automatically get cancelled, so if the penalties had been paid, the payments should be sat waiting to be reclaimed.

Dear Mr Goddard

Your "Late Filing Penalties..." article cleared very appreciated!!. However, can I assume that where an individual has failed to file returns for the last 5 or 6 years and has thus attracted countless £100 penalties (!!!) WHICH,BELIEVE IT OR NOT,HE HAS PAID (!!!),can reclaim the amounts he's paid when he files those returns showing he has a NIL liability? I think he can.

Appreciate confirmation if you could.

Yours sincerely

There's a little more to optimising your Google places listing but with integrated search small local firms can dominate historically tough keywords. I recommend using getlisted.org to help you optimise your Places page

Hi Nick, I very much agree with you. Twitter gives me the chance (as a fellow accountant) to interact with my clients, my potential target market, and my colleagues, and it also helps to keep me informed and up to date. I think its a great chance to come across as more approachable and less intimidating.
